Or, is there such a thing as an anti-Dragon missile?
So April 1st came and went a while ago with several good jokes from developers and publishers. However there is one in particular that stood out the most for me at least.
Namely the Guild Wars 2 Commando.
I am admittedly a bit of a military geek, (is there even a proper term for that? MilGeek?) so in many ways the thing hits a lot of the right strings for me to like it. But at the same time the thing is such a tease of a genre that's underused particularly within the video game media.
The World crossover.
Or when the modern world comes into contact with the fantasy world.
The idea isn't new at all I can admit as much, the basic premise of Shadowrun and D20 Urban Arcana is based around the world crossover with the fantasy world stepping into ours. Books such as Justina Robson's Quantum Gravity series has several very fantasy-ish worlds overlapping into ours, just to name one example. And a bunch of movies based on that theme as well.
However on the gaming side it's surprisingly dry, one title that I can recall is Hard to be a god which is a Russian developed game based on the novel of the same name. Then there is my old favorite Outcast which has the main character translated into a semi-fantasy world. It's not directly orcs and elves but the premise is similar. But aside from those and the Shadowrun games and one RTS title I can't really recall its name at the moment there isn't that much.
In all fairness it would've been an interesting way to take the Modern Warfare license to avoid it going so incredibly stale. Just come up with some ridiculous reason to transplant the player and a bunch of fellow characters over to a stock fantasy world and go to town with that against elves and orcs.
Rescuing the fair princess by blowing a huge hole in a dragon with a missile? Why not?
Reenact helms deep but this time you have machine guns? Yes please.
Hunt drows in the underdark with the help of nightvision gear? Why yes please.
I could go on and on with examples. But the point is that it's an idea I'd love to see and it would frankly be a fresh new take.
Or as one Something Awful forum poster so eloquently put it:
"I would play the hell out of a game that consists of a bunch of jarheads marauding through a stock fantasy world fucking shit up."
Modern Warfare 3: Welcome to Fantasy land could be a great hit.
Could also make for a great Mass Effect style Action RPG in which you have several different characters from both worlds available and allowing you to mix and match and create some interesting team combinations.
Sword n Sorcery n Guns. Sounds like an interesting genre to work with. A genre with several possibilities just waiting to be explored with games based on well known fantasy licenses and more.
If I get around to it I may just do a write up of a story idea based on the World Crossover genre that I've had boiling in my head for some time now.
